Troops of the joint military Operation Whirl Stroke on Tuesday reportedly engaged suspected armed herdsmen in a gun battle in Gyungwu Amua village, in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, killing two and injuring one.
Our correspondent gathered from one of the locals that the armed herdsmen had stormed the village from Nasarawa State but the troops laid ambush for the marauders.
A source, Hedejume Abur, told our correspondent on the telephone that the armed herdsmen were seven.
He added, “They were sighted in Gyungwu Amua village around 7.30pm on Tuesday, planning to attack the village when a distress call was put across to the troops of OPWS.
“The armed herders ran into the troops and opened fire on the soldiers and there was heavy exchange of gunfire. The troops killed two of the herders and injured one of them.”
Another villager, Terfa Unande, disclosed that two members of the community were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
The Force Commander of OPWS, Maj. Gen. Adeyemi Yekini, referred our correspondent to the Defence headquarters for further details on the clash.
